Ode to the Fresher

Its been quite a while since i contributed anything here but a few days ago I thought i should let you all know (students especially) how tough it is and (worse) what its going to be like when the Batch '09 graduates. There is no point in thinking that its going to be so easy to get Jobs and have the life that you've always imagined to have. There are not going to be many jobs for Freshers especially when the final year students graduate. At this point many big names in the IT industry have frozen all hiring and are even contemplating laying-off their employee. These are part of every company's 'cost-cutting-measures' and there is nothing to be alarmed about all this because the last time i was at MZ i had informed the graduating class (of all departments) about this(and that was in july i guess).

Anyhow, i hope people in the college both students and management realise that passing exams and getting a degree would not help anyone(and such policies must not be encouraged unless the goal is to get a good pass percentage). Students should concentrate on learning things as much as possible and not wait for them to come into their syllabus to then take and interest in learning. One such Topic would be Object Oriented Programming. A new trend has begun where people could earn if they have some knowledge of OOP. Sites like http://topcoder.com help people with sound knowledge in programming and algorithms to earn and the sponsors also pick up 'TopCoders' for Jobs.

There are similar means to earn by doing a bit of free-lancing. But the point is that you need to have knowledge and competence to do something rather than wondering where all the jobs have gone. I know that there is an optional paper on OOPs for every branch but in my case the majority of the people in my class opted for Medical Electronics because they had plenty of arrears and our voices got drowned in the cacaphony. The same people failed in that paper also. Hopefully you would be smarter.

Remove the false sense of hope that people might give you. You will not get jobs unless you have some skills. Those are what you need to develop in college and not run after marks and a higher aggregate. Any idiot in the world can get marks but knowledge comes only after much learning and stays longer with you. Competence comes by learning and not by marks.
