Google's testing a TV search service in conjunction with Dish Network, allowing users to search content from Dish and other sources such as YouTube.

It would also allow Google to target ads at individual households through a link with its ad-brokering business Google TV, says the Wall Street Journal.

Based on a set-top box, the service is almost certainly based on Android - possibly a cut-down version - and allows users to search via queries typed on a keyboard rather than using a remote control. Viewers could create a personalised line-up of shows.

But it doesn't look likely to hit the mainstream any time soon, as it's apparently only a very small-scale test with a small number of Google employees. The company says it could be discontinued any time.

But cable network Dish currently has 14 million subscribers, giving Google a nice start if it decides to take the service further. Google's TV Ads is already a Dish partner.

It would face some pretty stiff competition, though, as most set-top boxes in the US are supplied by carriers. An online video search engine apready exists in the form of Clicker, which has deals with set-top box manufacturers Boxee and Popbox, and Apple's also been trying to break into the market with Apple TV.

I’m a big fan of navigation solutions on your mobile phone or separate GPS devices. The main reason is that I like the convenience of bringing my GPS capabilities with me. Unfortunately, that convenience comes with the hassle that you have to mount your mobile phone or GPS in a way that you can see the small screen while driving. That usually means buying some sort of mounting accessory, or relying on voice commands alone for navigation. Neither solution is an ideal one.

Alpine Electronics, an automotive systems and audio manufacturer, seems to agree, which is why they have announced a strategic partnership with Nokia and NAVTEQ. Through the partnership, Alpine will offer a solution allowing applications and capabilities featured on a mobile phone to be integrated with a car’s systems with the most obvious one being GPS navigation.

For Nokia phones that would be Ovi Maps powered by NAVTEQ. That means you would no longer have to look at a small screen for navigation information since the high resolution screens and audio system of a vehicle would be utilized instead. The technology, called “Terminal Mode”, was developed in cooperation with CE4A, a mobile device interface standards group, and Nokia.

Alpine says that consumers will have the ability to connect their mobile device with their car’s infotainment system using a Bluetooth connection or USB cable. Such a setup also allows the device to be charged during long trips. In addition to GPS navigation, the solution could also use a mobile phone’s GPS to enable location-based services including ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System). Communication could be a two-way street allowing for a car’s service status and fuel information to be transferred to the phone.

I have found that a laptop or netbook is useless for taking notes when the teacher is drawing shapes and equations on the blackboard that will be on the test later.
Despite our technology, Pen and Paper is still the best way to go as far as taking notes in class is concerned. However, the CyperPad A4 is able to take whatever you want to write on its notebook better than a digital pen, and then saves it to its 32MB of internal memory.

Its been quite a while since i contributed anything here but a few days ago I thought i should let you all know (students especially) how tough it is and (worse) what its going to be like when the Batch '09 graduates. There is no point in thinking that its going to be so easy to get Jobs and have the life that you've always imagined to have. There are not going to be many jobs for Freshers especially when the final year students graduate. At this point many big names in the IT industry have frozen all hiring and are even contemplating laying-off their employee. These are part of every company's 'cost-cutting-measures' and there is nothing to be alarmed about all this because the last time i was at MZ i had informed the graduating class (of all departments) about this(and that was in july i guess).

Anyhow, i hope people in the college both students and management realise that passing exams and getting a degree would not help anyone(and such policies must not be encouraged unless the goal is to get a good pass percentage). Students should concentrate on learning things as much as possible and not wait for them to come into their syllabus to then take and interest in learning. One such Topic would be Object Oriented Programming. A new trend has begun where people could earn if they have some knowledge of OOP. Sites like http://topcoder.com help people with sound knowledge in programming and algorithms to earn and the sponsors also pick up 'TopCoders' for Jobs.

There are similar means to earn by doing a bit of free-lancing. But the point is that you need to have knowledge and competence to do something rather than wondering where all the jobs have gone. I know that there is an optional paper on OOPs for every branch but in my case the majority of the people in my class opted for Medical Electronics because they had plenty of arrears and our voices got drowned in the cacaphony. The same people failed in that paper also. Hopefully you would be smarter.

Remove the false sense of hope that people might give you. You will not get jobs unless you have some skills. Those are what you need to develop in college and not run after marks and a higher aggregate. Any idiot in the world can get marks but knowledge comes only after much learning and stays longer with you. Competence comes by learning and not by marks.

These are few sites that computer science engineers should follow...

Coding Horror
This is a nice blog by Jeff Atwood. It deals with a lot of issues related to programming.

Joel on Software
This is from Joel Spolsky, a former programmer at Microsoft and currently the head of Fog Creek Software. He has written a lot of seminal posts on his blog. Be sure to check out the archives.

Jeff and Joel are now working together to create Stack Overflow, a resource site for programmers.

Steve Yegge's Rants
Steve works at Google. He writes long blogs on issues related to programming. If at all there is one post which you must read, read "Math for Programmer". Discrete Mathematics and Theory of Computation are not just not two subjects that you need to clear to get your degree. They, along with Algorithms. are the heart of all Computer Science.

Paul Graham
Paul is a venture capitalist who focuses on entrepreneurship. He has written a few good essays of which "Great Hackers" is the most well known. And while we are at it, "hacker" is not a bad word, as the press would want us to believe!!

Eric Raymond
Speaking of "hacking", how can one miss Eric? Be sure to explore his site including his most famous essay "How to become a hacker".

DailyWTF
"Curious Pervasions in Information Technology", reads the title of DailyWTF. It is a hilarious site which contains stories related to programming, interviews and general information technology. Drop in when you are feeling low and you are sure to get a high, (if you are that kind of course)!

XKCD
XKCD is probably the most popular comic among geeks and nerd. In Randall's words, it is "a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language." Be sure to check out the statutory warning. ;-)

IT Conversations
This is a great podcast. Subscribe to the feed and make sure that your music player is synchronized with it. One of my favourite talks is by Steve Woz.

If you want to stay tuned to the latest tech news, stay tuned to Techmeme and TechCrunch. A tech podcast which you might want to follow would be This Week in Tech (TwiT). I haven't heard it myself but my friends tell me that it is great. You might as well want to check out the technology videos at TED. Check out themes like "What's Next in Tech?", "Tales of Invention" and "Technology, History and Destiny".

Be sure to check out all the links given here. I have included a wide variety so that you can choose depending on your taste. Phew! I just realised that I spent an hour creating this post. I need to take a bath and run to work. I am already late by an hour!

And before I log off, I would like to leave you with two related links. This is for people like me, who are looking forward to enter academics and join the most honourable profession in the world. If so, you might enjoy Ph.D (Piled Higher and Deeper), a hilarious comic about graduate students engaged in research (Check out the older comics too from the archive to check out how life as an undergraduate would be) and Tomorrow Professor's Blog, which deals with education.

Have a great time.

I know that there is a separate thread for project ideas. But, there is also something called department pride. :-P So, I thought it would be good if I post my project ideas here. Most of the projects would be programming which might require a considerable amount of research. There would be a few projects which are basic programming but might require some understanding of rudimentary concepts. Please feel free to email me in case you have any doubts. But I am sure to not answer any questions that Google can give out. So, please make sure that you have thoroughly checked the internet for answers before pinging me.

So, here we go...

1] Mapreduce is a programming paradigm which was invented at Google. Hadoop is a Java based open source framework for map reduce used by many projects, notably Yahoo. CUDA is a framework for using GPUs for processing. CUDA is specially suited for parallel tasks and also supports Mapreduce. Would it be possible for clusters running Hadoop to offload some of their tasks to the GPU if they are available?

Any task that is assigned to a Hadoop client must utilize both the CPU and GPU (using CUDA if available). This would be an interesting possibility to explore.

2] Most websites support the resume function for downloads today. Say that you are on a slow connection but you are downloading a large file using HTTP (and not P2P). Would it be possible for you to team up with friends who want to share their bandwidth? The file can be downloaded in different parts on different computer and assembled together later. Challenges include proper co-ordination, error checking and reassembly.

If done, this would be a very useful project too. I had given this idea to Bala of CS 2009 some time back. So, please get in touch with him if you want to explore this idea further.

That's all for now. Keep visiting this thread. I will post ideas here from time to time.
